“I was supposed to stay six months in Taiwan, but one day I just felt like I could spend more time than planned.”

Studying in Taiwan wasn’t planned at all for me. One day I was accepted in this job and discovered that one month later I would be in Taiwan, this country I had never thought about living in. Once I arrived here, I was supposed to stay six months and go back to my normal life in Brazil. Suddenly, one day I just felt like I could spend more time than planned. And I actually wanted it. So then I just stayed. In a matter of one week I was already getting the papers to transfer my university, changing my documents, making a new plan for my life.

Classes began and I said to myself I would stay here until graduate and leave with the wind. A new semester began and I had decided I would have a double major here as well. One more semester added. Another semester began and here I am accepted in my pre-study program of the master’s degree in Taiwan and Asia Pacific Studies. One more semester to the bill.

“I have discovered that half a world far from my home is exactly where I should be at this moment, and it has been awesome.”

It was in Taiwan that I learnt that vegetarian can have different meanings. It was in Taiwan that I had my first stinky tofu almost shoved down my throat. It was also here that I had the 14th one because I was craving it.

I have learnt Chinese, to not speak loudly nor touching people, to bow to everyone and everything, including supermarket shelves when I hit them by accident. I have learnt how small words at the end of your speech can make it softer or cute and I have learnt that sometimes Taiwanese people need some Latinos to show them how to party too, how to lose the inhibitions.
After so much time thinking I was out of place, I have discovered that half a world far from my home is exactly where I should be at this moment, and it has been awesome.
