My name is Hung, 2nd year Master student in CCU and my professional field is autonomous and robotics. Having described myself briefly, this one sentence is the best one:“I'm just a little person enjoying wandering around the big big world.”.

1. What made you decide to study in Taiwan?

Honestly, this is the most common question that I have ever had from people since first time came to study in Taiwan and yes, this is not wrong to ask this question. Some abroad students shared that the reasons are: the living standard in Taiwan is affordable, well-paid job opportunities, the beautiful sceneries, the Chinese cuisine is amazing, opening study admission etc. For me, the reason is simply that I just want to experience different environment and when the chance came, I immediately took that.

2. Briefly tell us about the program you are studying. What subjects are you studying? What have you enjoyed the most in your studies?

My degree program is Master Electrical Engineering. Particularly, my specific professional field is Robotics, Autonomous. For the subjects that related to my topic that I have taken for 2 years study are Autonomous, Machine learning, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision, Nature Inspired Optimization, Open Source Environment For Embedded Systems, Modern Control etc. For almost two years study, I found myself passionate about Autonomous based Artificial Intelligence approach. This topic is also involved my research project and intentionally set as my thesis topic. In other words, can say that I have already had almost two years experiences on this study topic.

3. How is studying in Taiwan when compared to studying and being a student in your home country? (Teaching Quality、Environment、School Equipment、Laboratory or others)

In term of teaching quality, I have already finished about 12 courses then generally, I say that the quality of teaching is quite good since I feel that the teachers here are open and we can freely have mutual discussion during the course. Since CCU is located on mountainous area then we have chance to enjoy fresh air and beautiful scenery which I really into. The equipment for assisting teaching in normal lecturing class is similar to my home country as we also have projector, white board, slide power point etc. However, equipment for laboratory is a big difference since here they have many more devices that are available and robot platforms for experiment and implementation in comparison with my home country. Additionally, the huge English resources always available in CCU library is the thing that I like most during my study time here.

4. What has been the most difficult part about applying to study in Taiwan? How did you overcome the difficulty?

I As far as I can remember, the most uncomfortable moment during the applying time to study in Taiwan is the documents authentication process. It took three level of authentication for my documents before eligible for admission in ROC Embassy. Finally, I can handle this difficulty by consulting the experience online. However, it really was time-consuming.

5. What do you plan to do after you have finish your studies in Taiwan? Would you like to stay in Taiwan?  Why? 

This is also the most asking question from people I got so far. Honestly, I'm not planning to stay in Taiwan when I have finished my study here. However, from some information I got from Taiwanese student I would like to try my luck for applying for a job in Taiwan and then I will make final decision stay or not based on the applying result. The reason for possibly of staying in Taiwan for a job just by chance know that my research topic is highly in demand and well paid in Taiwan.

6. How do you think studying in Taiwan can benefit you in your future career?

In a positive manner, it is good to have a new experience about new environment and have a chance to learn new thing, have a chance to meet new friends and gradually get to know more open opportunities in the future. I have no idea about the future so that I cannot say that much.

7. What do you see as your key achievements when studying in Taiwan?

Problem-solving: This skill is much more strengthening as I work as a researcher. It is hard to express in several sentences. It just is felt only if you are in the same condition. However, generally can say that researcher have to start with a topic problem and try to seek a way to solve that problem.

Self-adaption: Just like every abroad students come to Taiwan to study, they always found that language barrier is usually the big problem. They may feel lonely and gradually lose spirit and they might give up consequently. Self-adaption is a thing I learned from my Taiwanese friend, he shared to me that “once you cannot resist just enjoy it” and this living philosophy useful to me somehow. Then I start to learn Chinese and make friends and feel easier living.

8. What advice do you have for other interested overseas students who want to come to Taiwan to study?

I will say: “If you have a chance to come to Taiwan, just take it - it is worth to experience.”
