The Graduate Institute of Art History at National Taiwan University aims to engage in academic research in art history. Its approach is grounded in the study of art appreciation, supplemented by exploration and interpretation within cultural historical contexts, striving for interdisciplinary integration. The institute's goal is to cultivate specialized talent in art history research, helping to alleviate the shortage of art history faculty domestically, and nurturing researchers and cultural heritage preservation professionals for museums and other cultural institutions. Additionally, it aims to foster educational talent for promoting cultural heritage conservation and development, thereby realizing ideals in humanities education.
The Institute primarily focuses on the study of Chinese art history, expanding into discussions of cultural exchanges in the Asian region. This includes painting, calligraphy, ceramics, bronze ware, Buddhist art, Taiwanese art, Taiwanese and Asian architectural history, Southeast Asian archaeological art history, and Asian decorative arts history. Each semester, foundational and specialized courses are offered in these areas, aimed at progressively developing graduate students' capabilities for independent research.
