Established in 1941 as the Department of Applied Chemistry and later reorganized in 1945 into the Department of Chemical Engineering, National Taiwan University's Department of Chemical Engineering is the oldest of its kind among Taiwanese universities. Over its long history, the department has graduated more than 5,000 bachelor's, 1,350 master's, and 130 doctoral students. Today, it boasts a robust faculty of 35 members and enrolls 523 undergraduate students, 182 master's students, and 114 doctoral candidates. Known for its strength in both teaching and research, the department focuses not only on traditional chemical engineering but also emphasizes new fields such as New Material Science, Polymer Science and Engineering, Biotechnology, Pollution Prevention, Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Specialty Chemicals. Students are equipped with skills in integrated process analysis, design, industrial safety, and environmental protection, preparing them for careers in government, academia, and industry worldwide.
