National Taiwan University (NTU) traces its origins to 1928 as Taihoku Imperial University under Japanese administration, initially establishing a prominent Department of Chemistry. Over the years, the department expanded its academic offerings and research initiatives. Post-World War II, the university transitioned to Chinese administration, renaming to NTU. The Department of Chemistry grew significantly, adding master's and doctoral programs in 1956 and 1966, respectively. Despite organizational changes, such as the creation of the College of Science and the establishment of specialized research centers like the Chemistry Research Promotion Center in 1965, the department maintained its stature in chemical education and research. Infrastructure developments, such as the New Chemical Research Building in 2003, further enhanced its capabilities, now housing a diverse faculty and supporting a substantial student body across various chemistry disciplines.

Throughout its history, NTU's Department of Chemistry has evolved into a leading hub for chemical education and research in Taiwan. Beginning with foundational chairs in theoretical and organic chemistry, the department expanded to encompass additional sub-disciplines and advanced degree programs. Collaborations with institutions like National Tsing Hua University and Academia Sinica bolstered its research efforts, culminating in significant contributions to Taiwan's scientific community. Today, the department continues to innovate, offering programs in chemical biology alongside traditional chemistry disciplines. With state-of-the-art facilities and a dedicated faculty, NTU remains pivotal in shaping the next generation of chemists and advancing the frontiers of chemical sciences both locally and globally.
