Established in 1961, the Department and Graduate Institute of Library and Information Science (DGILIS) at National Taiwan University initially focused on training library professionals. Over time, it expanded to include research in library science and information technology. It introduced master’s and PhD programs in 1980 and 1989 respectively, becoming Taiwan's first institute offering all three levels of study in the field. In 1998, it was renamed to reflect its broader scope in information science. DGILIS emphasizes interdisciplinary research and collaboration with fields like computer engineering and information management. It aims to enhance Taiwan's information infrastructure through innovative research and educational programs.
