Since its establishment in 1943, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at National Taiwan University has been pivotal in producing top-tier mechanical engineers and researchers across Taiwan's industries, spanning high-tech and traditional sectors. The department's educational focus has evolved alongside technological advancements, emphasizing a comprehensive understanding of fundamental sciences, mechanics, and recent innovations. Core disciplines include Solid Mechanics, Design, Manufacturing, Fluids and Heat Transfer, and System Control, complemented by interdisciplinary studies aimed at enhancing students' analytical and integration skills. Project-based learning and laboratory experiments are integral to the curriculum, fostering creativity and confidence in tackling real-world engineering challenges while instilling a strong sense of social responsibility.

In addition to its educational mission, the department boasts a robust research portfolio led by faculty renowned in diverse fields such as MEMS, nano-manufacturing, advanced power systems, biomechanics, renewable energy, fluid dynamics, robotics, and intelligent technologies. Annually, the department publishes approximately 200 journal papers indexed by the Science Citation Index and secures around 30 patents. With a distinguished faculty comprising chair professors, researchers recognized by the Ministry of Science and Technology, and recipients of numerous prestigious awards, the department maintains a high standard of excellence in both education and research within the global mechanical engineering community.
