The Institute of Oceanography at National Taiwan University, established in 1968, houses four specialized divisions dedicated to advancing marine sciences through interdisciplinary research and education. The Physical Oceanography Division focuses on studying ocean currents, temperature variations, and their ecological impacts across different scales, utilizing field observations, remote sensing, and theoretical models to explore phenomena like the Kuroshio current and typhoon-ocean interactions. The Chemical Oceanography Division, established in 1990, offers comprehensive M.S. and Ph.D. programs in marine biogeochemical cycles, environmental chemistry, and seawater characteristics, supported by state-of-the-art laboratory instrumentation for impactful research and publication in scientific journals.

The Marine Geology and Geophysics Division conducts research on the dynamics of the lithosphere, offshore sedimentary structures, and natural resource surveys near Taiwan using advanced tools such as seismic profilers, echo sounders, and underwater vehicles. This division plays a crucial role in projects ranging from geothermal exploration to marine resource assessment and underwater infrastructure planning, contributing significantly to the field of Earth sciences both locally and internationally. Finally, the Division of Marine Biology and Fisheries explores marine biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and fisheries science, bridging theoretical knowledge with practical solutions for sustainable management and conservation efforts.
