Established in 1953 as the first public school of Pharmacy in Taiwan under the Ministry of Education, the Department of Pharmacy at National Taiwan University's College of Medicine has grown significantly in both scope and academic offerings. Initially offering undergraduate education, the department expanded with the establishment of the Graduate Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1970, which introduced master's and later Ph.D. programs in 1983. Over the years, the institute underwent several reorganizations to enhance teaching and research capabilities, dividing into divisions such as Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmacognosy, Pharmaceutics, Clinical Pharmacy, and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology. In 2000, the Institute of Clinical Pharmacy was established independently to advance education in clinical pharmacy, followed by further restructuring in 2008 to focus on Drug Discovery, Pharmaceutical Technology, and Medicinal Biotechnology. These changes aimed to provide multidisciplinary education and equip students with skills necessary for pharmaceutical research, development, and clinical practice.

The Department of Pharmacy offers a comprehensive curriculum encompassing basic pharmacy disciplines like medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics, pharmacognosy, pharmaceutical biotechnology, and pharmaceutical analysis. Additionally, courses in clinical pharmacy are designed to train professionals for pharmacy practice and research. Recognizing the increasing demand for skilled pharmacists and pharmaceutical researchers in society, the department continues to adapt its programs to meet these needs. It emphasizes practical training and the acquisition of professional skills, aiming to produce competent pharmacists capable of contributing to drug development, healthcare services, and pharmaceutical research. With ongoing efforts to enhance research facilities and expand educational opportunities, the Department of Pharmacy at NTU remains committed to its mission of educating students and advancing the field of pharmacy in Taiwan.
