National Taiwan University, formerly Taipei Imperial University under Japanese rule, was established in 1945 following the transfer of sovereignty to the Republic of China. The Department of Political Science was founded in 1947 within the Faculty of Law, and underwent significant reforms over the years. In 1963, it divided into three subdivisions: political theory, international relations, and public administration, each with its own student recruitment. By 1976, the department introduced a doctoral program, and in 2001, an Executive Master's in Public Administration aimed at enhancing public and private sector professionals' academic pursuits and bridging theory with practice. The department's mission is to cultivate exceptional leaders with strong political science foundations, critical thinking skills, and global perspectives.

The undergraduate program offers three tracks: political theory, international relations, and public administration. Students in political theory engage in rational analytical training for public affairs involvement, while international relations students focus on analyzing global politics and participating in international affairs. Public administration students learn various administrative management techniques. The graduate programs further develop professionals in these fields, emphasizing democracy literacy, global vision, and critical thinking. The doctoral program aims to elevate academics to advanced levels, fostering independent research in political theory, international relations, and public administration.
