Over these two decades, Life Sciences (Biological Science) has surged forward and made great contributions toward human welfare and environmental protection. The application of biotechnology provides a breakthrough for the bottlenecks typically slowing medicine and agricultural developments, helping to solve the problems of disease, food, resource utilization and environmental conservation, as well as promote the next wave of industrial revolution. In addition, the trend of teaching and researching for biological sciences has already changed from distinguished by biome (e.g. zoology, botany, entomology, fishery, etc.) to integrate organizational levels in study subjects, such as molecular biology, cytology, physiology, ecology, and evolutionary biology.

Considering the prospective concept of life sciences, our school established the College of Life Science in 2003, including two departments and 5 graduate schools. Among these institutes, the Department of Life Science consists of the faculty from the Department of Zoology, Department of Botany, and the Institute of Fisheries Science, which originally belonged to the College of Science. The department now offers core biology classes for both undergraduate and graduate programs and provides mandatory basic biology classes for freshmen.
